For Glasgow Art Weekend we will show Shakedown – an intimate portrait of Black queer community. This unique film offers a rare glimpse into a legendary underground lesbian Los Angeles Club.

It’s 2002, and for those within LA’s Black lesbian scene, Shakedown is the place to be. A documentary compiled from camcorder footage shot over several years, Leilah Weinraub’s film drifts from the dance floor to intimate interviews in dream-like sequences, portraying a slice of history that refuses to be forgotten.

Whilst the film centres on the sex workers at the heart of the club night, Shakedown is ultimately a story of friendship, community and collective joy, particularly in the face of racially aggravated police crackdowns and disappearing venues.

Supported by Film Hub Scotland, part of the BFI’s Film Audience Network, awarding funding on behalf of Screen Scotland and the BFI National Lottery.
